UPPER DARBY, Pa. (WPVI) -- With the arrival of the first frost of the season, commuters were bundling up against the cold Monday morning.

Temperatures dipped below freezing in some areas for the first time in months.

"I think it's going to be a great day," said Joe Thomas of West Philadelphia. "Then I get hit by the cold, and it's like a sledgehammer."

A blast of cold air. And just like that, fall felt like winter.

"It came out of nowhere," said Matt Brown of Overbrook. "Season hasn't made up its mind yet."

Commuters lined the tracks at the Overbrook SEPTA station Monday morning, and they arrived with extra layers.

The temperatures started sliding over the weekend. Overnight they dipped into the 20s and 30s.

The feeling of the air came as a shock even for those who were expecting it.

"I knew it was coming," said Mike Manley of Center City Philadelphia. "I lived in Florida for last year and just moved back to Philadelphia and haven't had winter in a while. So I wasn't really prepared."

Early Monday morning, commuters couldn't rely on the sun yet for some added warmth. So it was a cold wait at 69th Street Station in Upper Darby.

People reached into their closets and hauled out their coats, all the while wondering how bad it will be when winter really settles in.

"I'm not ready for this," said Darnell Porter of Upper Darby.

"When I stepped outside and felt the temperature, I stepped back inside and grabbed a coat," said Eric Johnson of Yeadon.

"It might snow before winter even hits," said Sam Williams of Logan. "I think we're going to have a real, real cold water this year."

In East Falls, it was cold enough to see your breath. The feeling at one bus stop was not exactly welcoming of this cold weather.

It seems winter is knocking on the door. Many here were saying, simply, '"Come back later."

"I thought I was going to get frostbite," said Kiera Adams.

"I didn't put on enough," said Sheila Henson of Center City Philadelphia. "I should have put on some long johns too."

"It's like winter just came," said Aikia Adams of North Philadelphia. "It didn't slowly, gradually go into it. Summer stopped and winter came."
