FAIRMOUNT PARK (WPVI) -- There was a lot of potential Tuesday for heat exhaustion out at the 5th annual Kids Fest in Philadelphia's Fairmount Park.

Over a thousand high energy kids were getting a workout in the summer heat.

The kids came from day camps all over the city.

The Parks and Recreation Department created a pop-up amusement park at the Dell Music Center.

Fortunately, most of it was in the shade, and intermittent clouds overhead helped shielding the kids from the sun's punishing heat.

But staffers were on the lookout for signs of heat stress and giving the kids opportunities to cool off.

"We have water stations all around so they can come up and get water when they're thirsty," said Terri Kerwawich of the Parks and Recreation Department. "We have two water slides so they can get wet and cool off with the water slides. We have ice cream we're giving out to the kids for free."

The youngsters were taking full advantage of the water slides, and they were gulping down cups of water.

But you might have guessed the most popular method of cooling down - the ice cream truck was the busiest place in the park. Jonathan and Ishana McCoy were already on their second helping before lunch.

The danger for the kids is getting too caught up in the fun to heed the warning signs for heat exhaustion.

But fire department medics were on hand, and many of the counselors are trained to be on the look-out.

They were just hoping a great time wouldn't marred by too much of a good thing in Tuesday's heat and humidity.

Remember, it's the very young and the elderly who are most at risk.
