Ex-police chief charged in prostitution case

EASTON, Pa. (AP) - August 27, 2008 Authorities say former Palmer Township police chief Nick DiVietro was one of four men arrested in an undercover sting Friday in Easton.

Police say the 81-year-old former chief offered $20 to an undercover female police officer.

DiVietro was police chief for 28 years. He was hired as the safety and welfare officer for the Easton Area School District in 1991. He later retired.

He and the other men who were arrested were charged with soliciting prostitution and were released.

Soliciting prostitution is a third-degree misdemeanor punishable by up to one year in prison and a $2,500 fine.

Police Chief Larry Palmer says Mayor Sal Panto will hold a news conference Wednesday.
