Ex-wife of NJ's gay governor opposes gay marriage

MOUNTAIN LAKES, N.J. - January 14, 2010

Dina Matos told The Daily Record of Parsippany that the state Senate did the right thing when it defeated gay marriage legislation last week.

Matos is best known for standing by the side of then-Gov. Jim McGreevey when he declared in 2004 that he was a "gay American." They divorced in 2008.

Matos supports the state's civil union law. She told the newspaper as a Catholic, she believes in "traditional marriage between a man and a woman."

The 43-year-old has not remarried but is dating.

McGreevey is studying to become an Episcopal priest. He's in a gay relationship and has said he would marry his partner if possible.

He could not be reached for reaction to his ex-wife's comments.
