'Tragic accident': 1 dead, 5 hurt after single-car crash on Columbus Boulevard in South Philadelphia

One person is dead and five others were hurt in a single-car crash on Columbus Boulevard in South Philadelphia.

PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- One person is dead and five others were hurt in a single-car crash on Columbus Boulevard in South Philadelphia.

It happened just before 1 a.m. on Friday in the 700 block of Christopher Columbus Blvd.

When medics arrived, they found a sedan with heavy damage, with several people trapped inside, including some who were unresponsive.

First responders were able to get everyone out of the vehicle and they were taken to a nearby hospitals.

Officials say the driver appears to be a teen male. He is said to be in stable condition.

Two 18-year-old females were also in the vehicle. One was pronounced dead at the hospital and the other is in critical condition.

Another female in her early 20s was also taken to the hospital in critical condition.

Officials say two 17-year-old males were taken to CHOP in stable condition.

Preliminary information indicates that the vehicle exited I-95 SB at Washington Avenue, which connects to Christopher Columbus Blvd.

The vehicle struck a curb and went airborne, landing on its passenger side.

Police say that, at this time, this is a tragic accident.
