Second Mile charity announces layoffs

PHILADELPHIA - December 7, 2011

The Second Mile was founded in 1977 by former Penn State assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky, who allegedly molested 10 boys he met through the charity's programs.

The charity says in a new statement issued Wednesday that it has lost significant financial support, and that some employees will be laid off over the next several months "in an orderly phase-out."

The Second Mile says it's saddened by the need to make the cuts and will continue to seek preservation of its key programs, and that previously scheduled programs will continue as planned.
