Trump's border czar suggests a possible drawdown in Minnesota, but only after 'cooperation'

MINNEAPOLIS -- A 37-year-old man was shot and killed Saturday morning in Minneapolis -- the second shooting of a U.S. citizen this month by federal agents in the city.

The shooting of Alex Pretti, an ICU nurse, ratcheted up tensions, as protesters clashed in the streets with law enforcement in the aftermath of the shooting.

The incident followed the fatal shooting of Renee Good, a 37-year-old mother, on Jan. 7.

White House clarifies border czar Tom Homan's role in Minnesota

White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said in a social media post on Monday that border czar Tom Homan will be managing U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement operations in Minnesota and coordinating with those investigating the alleged fraud in the state.

"Tom Homan will be managing ICE Operations on the ground in Minnesota to continue arresting the worst of the worst criminal illegal aliens," Leavitt said in the post on X. "In addition, Tom will coordinate with those leading investigations into the massive, widespread fraud that has resulted in billions of taxpayer dollars being stolen from law-abiding citizens in Minnesota."

Trump sending border czar Tom Homan to Minnesota

President Trump announced that he'll be sending his border czar, Tom Homan, to Minnesota on Monday night.

But the president is also continuing to try to draw attention away from the fatal shooting of Alex Pretti over the weekend by focusing on other issues in the state, including writing about the alleged fraud there and mentioning Rep. Ilhan Omar.

"I am sending Tom Homan to Minnesota tonight. He has not been involved in that area, but knows and likes many of the people there. Tom is tough but fair, and will report directly to me," Trump wrote in a social media post.

White House border czar Tom Homan listens to reporters during an interview, Wednesday, Jan. 14, 2026, in Washington.

Trump went on to claim that the Department of Justice and Congress are investigating Omar, but as of now, House committees are investigating alleged fraud in Minnesota, not specifically Omar.

Judge set to hear arguments on Minnesota's immigration crackdown after fatal shootings

A federal judge will hear arguments Monday on whether she should at least temporarily halt the immigration crackdown in Minnesota that has led to the fatal shootings of two people by government officers.

The state of Minnesota and the cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul sued the Department of Homeland Security earlier this month, five days after Renee Good was shot by an Immigration and Customs officer. Saturday's shooting by a Border Patrol officer of Alex Pretti has only added urgency to the case.

Since the original filing, the state and cities have substantially added to their original request. They're trying to restore the state of affairs that existed before the Trump administration launched Operation Metro Surge on Dec. 1.

The hearing is set for Monday morning in federal court in Minneapolis. Democratic Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison said he plans to personally attend.

VA Secretary blames state, local officials for their 'refusal to cooperate'

Secretary of Veterans Affairs Doug Collins has issued a statement confirming that Alex Pretti, who federal agents fatally shot on Saturday, was a nurse at the Minneapolis VA Medical Center, and Collins offered his condolences to the Pretti family.

Collins went on to blame state and local officials, saying in his statement, "Such tragedies are unfortunately happening in Minnesota because of state and local officials' refusal to cooperate with the federal government to enforce the law and deport dangerous illegal criminals."
