NORTHEAST PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- A Philadelphia high school police officer has died from an apparent heart attack hours after breaking up a fight, Action News has learned.

The officer, identified as 50-year-old Sgt. Daryl Giles, was assigned to George Washington High School in Northeast Philadelphia.

Action News is told Giles was involved in breaking up a large fight that broke out at the school early Monday.

After quelling the brawl, he reportedly told his fellow officer that he was suffering chest pains.

Giles was later found collapsed on the floor of a basement restroom in the custodial area of the school.

The school nurse tried to revive him by using CPR, but was unsuccessful.

He was taken to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The Medical Examiner will perform an autopsy to determine the official cause of death, however, it is believed he died of natural causes.

Giles, known as 'Sarge' in the school, was a 19-year-old veteran of the school police force.

After the fight, three students were arrested on disorderly conduct charges. It remains to be seen if they will be facing more serious charges.
