12-year-old battling blood disorder uses Make-A-Wish to support children experiencing homelessness

PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- A 12-year-old who has spent his life battling a blood disorder is using his Make-A-Wish experience to help children experiencing homelessness.

Sam Okyere, who has been treated at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, chose to turn his wish into what he called a mission to give back to others.

Rather than requesting a trip to Disney or an opportunity to meet his favorite athlete, Jalen Hurts, Sam organized a collection of toiletries, essential items and children's games for families living in a West Philadelphia shelter.

"We would always see these homeless people just going down the street asking for food. I just really didn't like that, so I really want to help out and give back to people who don't have anything," said Sam.

On the day of the donation, Make-A-Wish partnered with Families Forward Philadelphia to deliver hundreds of donated items.

Organizers also set up tents for games, a petting zoo and prizes for children living at the shelter.

Jason Miller, CEO of Families Forward Philadelphia, said family homelessness often receives less attention than homelessness among adults.

"We have a lot of street homelessness with adults, but what we don't see it in families," Miller said. "They need to be recognized. They're doing great work trying to figure out their next step in being unhoused, and Sam is acknowledging them today and we thank him so much for throwing this big party."

There are currently 52 children living at the shelter.

Sam said he hopes the donations and celebration will remind them that they are seen and valued.
