PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- Paid Sponsor Partnership: Philadelphia Corporation for Aging
Wilfreta Baugh is the chair of this year's PHS Philadelphia Flower Show.
"I love it because there's so many things here I've never even seen," she said. "I serve as an ambassador. I get to meet so many people, so many wonderful people. It's hard to even display the kind of joy you get from being in this position.
She's also a longtime member of Our Garden Club of Philadelphia and Vicinity.
"This country's oldest, continuously active African-American garden club," she said.
The club was founded in March of 1939 and its 29 members meet monthly.
"We have lectures, we have workshops," said Baugh.
"Our meetings are informative, fun, interesting, and we have wonderful snacks," said member, Rylanda Wilson.
They host their own Flower Show every other year and you can see the club's members well-represented in the competitive classes of the Philadelphia Flower Show.
Wilson joined the garden club six years ago.
"The first time, I did a door. We got a red ribbon for it!" she said.
Wilson is already making plans for next year. She, her daughter and two granddaughters are going to try their hand at the uber popular miniature settings.
Bernadette Briscoe discovered the club three years ago.
"And it was like an incredible explosion of creativity," she said. "It opened up another chapter."
This year, she entered two of her prized plants in the PHS Hamilton Horticourt.
"I have Kokedama. It's an orchid wrapped in moss," sad Briscoe. "I also have a pink princess, which is a philodendron."
Both took home ribbons.
"It's one of my pleasures in life," said Baugh.
You can catch the creations of Our Garden Club of Philadelphia & Vicinity at The Flower Show through Sunday.
