Bean Ability Cafe helps people with disabilities learn work skills

DREXEL HILL (WPVI) -- Anne Leopold created Bean Ability Coffee Cafe last year in Drexel Hill.

The cafe offers a volunteer program that enables individuals with disabilities to develop workplace skills in a supportive environment.

Every day, a person with a disability comes in to help a barista who assists them in gaining those workplace skills.

The most popular drinks are the caramel latte and, for fall, the pumpkin spice latte. All pastries are made by Sweets by Julie, which pair perfectly with a cup of coffee.

The cafe offers games, books, bi-weekly events, and on Saturdays, live performances.

Anne created Bean Ability through her non-profit Emmaus Home, which she founded in 2015 on behalf of her son, Kevin, who has autism. The non-profit Emmaus Home provides integrated housing for adults with disabilities.

Bean Ability Coffee Cafe was established last year to address its most significant challenge: forming meaningful relationships.

Anne hopes the cafe serves as a space for the community, for both those with and without a disability.
