Bitter cold grips region as residents and road crews prepare for more snow in the Philly area

PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- Old Man Winter made his presence felt across the Philadelphia region on Tuesday, as frigid temperatures prompted residents to bundle up and plan carefully before heading outdoors.

"Everyone needs a plan before going outside," was a common sentiment from those braving the cold along Kelly Drive near the river.

Ben Mayer of West Mount Airy said he came prepared.

"I have long underwear on," Mayer said.

Arnette Eleby of West Philadelphia also layered up, though with a simpler approach.

"I got longjohns, a nice thick hoodie, that's it. That's all. And a hot toddy!" said Eleby.

Beyond personal preparations, many people are taking steps to get ready for the next round of winter weather expected this weekend.

Stanley's Hardware in Roxborough was busy on Tuesday, with customers buying snow-melting materials and shovels.

Alex Jaconski, the manager of Stanley's Hardware, said demand for winter supplies has increased after slowing in recent years.

"Every year there is a version of what we're experiencing now," Jaconski said. "But it's been particularly crazy the last several days. People trying to get their salt, their shovels and be ready."

Transportation officials are also preparing for what could be a significant weekend storm. PennDOT officials from the five-county region said that as of this past weekend, they still have more than 82,000 pounds of salt available for roadways.

Helen Reinbrecht with PennDOT said the agency is confident in its current supply.

"We are comfortable with salt levels. We have more salt coming in. So, we don't have any concerns of low salt, at least for these next few storms," Reinbrecht said.

For now, residents and officials alike say they are ready, even as the cold underscores that winter is far from over.
