RECAP: Philly region cleaning up from historic storm

PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- A major winter storm brought more than a foot of snow to Philadelphia and many other communities in the region, just as the snow from the last storm finally started to melt.

Snow totals even topped 20 inches in spots as a nor'easter struck the region Sunday and lingered well into Monday.

The storm will go down in the record books from Philadelphia north to Boston.

In Philadelphia, we officially received 14 inches of snow, placing this storm as our 17th largest on record.

A jackpot of 18-24" of snow was found in northern Burlington County and northern Ocean County, up toward New York City.

None of our reporting sites officially met the definition of blizzard conditions, but from Newark, NJ, up into Rhode Island and southeastern Massachusetts, many locations have achieved blizzard conditions with a record snowfall of 32.8" in Providence.

When temperatures drop into the low to mid 20s overnight, this means a freeze of any untreated surfaces that will create icy spots for the morning.

Philly schools virtual on Tuesday; snow emergency ends at 6 a.m.

The School District of Philadelphia will be virtual on Tuesday as the city works to clean up from the winter storm.

While the snow emergency remains in effect until 6 a.m., city offices and its courts will be open on Tuesday.

"More than 1,000 City employees and 800 pieces of equipment are working around the clock to keep roads passable and residents safe," said Mayor Cherelle Parker.

Due to the snow emergency, residents must avoid parking along snow emergency routes.

PPA continues to offer a $5 flat fee parking in designated garages in Center City for people who need to move a vehicle from an emergency route. If your vehicle was relocated from an emergency route, call 215-686-SNOW to get information about where to pick it up.

NJ Transit announces update on service

NJ Transit has announced service changes following the winter storm.

Rail service (except Atlantic City Rail Line) will operate on a Presidents' Day holiday schedule with some adjustments.

Here's a list of services by rail line:

Morristown, Gladstone & Montclair-Boonton Lines
Operating on a Presidents' Day schedule with all Midtown Direct service to Penn Station New York diverted to Hoboken. Cross honoring in Hoboken will be in effect with PATH (to 33rd St.), NY Waterway Ferry (to Midtown/W39th St.) and NJ TRANSIT 126 bus as part of the Portal Cutover adjustments.

Pascack Valley Line and Main-Bergen & Port Jervis Lines
Operating as scheduled on a Presidents' Day schedule

Atlantic City Rail Line
Operating on a regular weekday schedule

Trains on the Northeast Corridor, North Jersey Coast Line, and Raritan Valley Lines will have the following schedule adjustments due to Amtrak work being done on the Northeast Corridor to clear snow from their track switches. Amtrak's work will continue overnight, and these adjustments will remain in place until their work is complete.

Northeast Corridor
Operating on a Presidents' Day schedule with the following adjustments:

Northeast Corridor trains will operate between Trenton and Metropark, then express to Newark Penn Station for travel to Secaucus and Penn Station New York. Trains will not make local stops between Metropark and Newark.

North Jersey Coast Line & Raritan Valley Line
Service will remain suspended on these lines. Resumption of service on these lines, along with the resumption of the local stops on the Northeast Corridor, is fully contingent upon Amtrak's completion of their work to clear the snow from their track switches.

Bus, Light Rail and Access Link will all operate on a regular weekday schedule beginning with the start of the service day on Tuesday morning. However, customers should be prepared for possible delays, detours or cancellations depending on roadway conditions.

Customers should continue to monitor service alerts, njtransit.com, the NJ TRANSIT mobile app or their individual line account on X for the latest service updates.
