Calls for police policy change in wake of Quakertown protest
QUAKERTOWN, Pa. (WPVI) -- The fallout continues over the Quakertown police department's response to a student protest against ICE in February.
This comes just days after the Bucks County District Attorney's Office released its findings into the Quakertown Police Department's response.
About 20 protestors showed up at the borough council meeting Wednesday night, calling for police policy changes.
The protest stems from the February incident, where several teens were caught on camera in a chaotic confrontation with Quakertown police, including Police Chief Scott McElree, who is also the borough manager.
According to an earlier report from The Police Chiefs Association of Bucks County, McElree suffered extensive injuries during the incident, including three fractured ribs, a collapsed lung and a lacerated ear.
Five teens were charged but, in March, the district attorney's office dropped felony charges against the teens. The D.A. has diverted all five juveniles toward having their records expunged.
The protestors said they want officers to wear uniforms and properly identify themselves during operations.
The district attorney sharply criticized McElree's actions during the protest. That criticism included McElree being in plain clothes when he got involved.
McElree left Thursday night's meeting before public comment.
