Community block party in North Philadelphia promotes connection, support and youth mental health

PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- A community block party in North Philadelphia brought residents together over the holiday weekend for celebration, conversation and access to resources focused on supporting children and families.

The annual event, held near North 28th Street and West Allegheny Avenue, was organized by Tina Collins, founder of the Show Me the Way Foundation. The foundation is all about helping children who have been impacted by adverse childhood events such as gun violence and poverty.

"We can't rely on one organization, such as our police or law enforcement, to fix the problem. We have to work collectively. We have to work as a unit. I really believe in the mindset of the village," Collins said.

Collins said this year's event focused on the mental well-being of young people and their families.

"We're focusing on youth mental health and wellness. Not just for our youth but the whole family structure because everyone's impacted by it," she said.

Members of the Philadelphia Police Department's 39th District and the Sheriff's Department attended the event alongside several local organizations that offered resources for children and families.

The gathering also featured entertainment and activities, including dancing, food trucks and opportunities for residents to meet one another.

"I like the loud music and all the tents and stuff where you can go talk to people!" said Jayla Clark of North Philadelphia.

"Community's important. It's all about relationships. And that's why I'm here today, for relationship building," said Bisa Bennett of Germantown.

Jennifer Clark of North Philadelphia said the event demonstrated the value of bringing residents together.

"It's very overwhelming just to see the community get together and how we all can be at peace," she said.

Collins said the event helps highlight a positive side of the neighborhood and encourages connection among residents.

"This event has really given us an opportunity to shine a different light on North Philadelphia. We can have fun here. We can enjoy each other, we can communicate, we can connect and not have to worry about all those negative things," she said.

According to Collins, the most common feedback she receives after the event each year is that attendees want it to return. She said she intends to continue holding the gathering in the future.
