PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- One man is dead and another critically injured following a multi-vehicle crash that shut down the Roosevelt Boulevard in Philadelphia's Hunting Park neighborhood for hours on Friday morning.
It happened around 3:30 a.m. near the Broad Street exit.
Police say it began when a 55-year-old man and a 31-year-old man were involved in an accident that left their vehicles disabled in the northbound lanes.
When other cars started crashing into their disabled vehicles, both men jumped over the concrete barrier into the southbound lanes to avoid being injured.
That's when both men were struck by a silver Toyota, which was being driven by a 21-year-old man.
The 55-year-old man was found lying in the southbound lanes and pronounced dead at the scene. His identity has not been released.
The 31-year-old man was taken to Einstein Medical Center with multiple injuries. He is listed in extremely critical condition.
The driver of the Toyota remained at the scene and is cooperating with investigators.
The highway was closed in both directions between Broad Street and 9th Street for several hours. It reopened around 10:30 a.m.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
