Delaney Hall death: 3rd detainee dies after being held at NJ ICE facility, Rep. Rob Menendez says

NEWARK, N.J. (WPVI) -- There is growing scrutiny over the conditions at New Jersey's largest immigration detention facility.

Congressman Rob Menendez says a third man has died following a medical emergency at Delaney Hall in Newark.

He says it took two weeks to confirm the death and only found out about it during an unannounced oversight visit to the ICE facility earlier this week after the death of another man, Edwin Lopez-Cornejo.

The man reportedly began having a seizure after arriving at Delaney Hall.

Menendez says ICE granted him a "discretionary release," and he died at the hospital.

DHS has not publicly addressed Menendez's reports.

ICE is required to notify Congress and the public if someone dies in their custody, but technically, according to ICE, the third death did not happen there.

All nine congressional New Jersey Democrats sent a letter to the Department of Homeland Security and ICE, requesting an accounting of the three deaths.

Meanwhile, on the Senate floor Thursday afternoon, Senator Cory Booker called for the detention center to be closed.

"I am now asking for unanimous consent to pass the Delaney Hall Closure Act that would close Delaney Hall within 90 days," he said. "They're out of excuses. We are out of time. How many more people should die?"
