Drivers hit the road this Labor Day weekend amid high gas prices

HAMMONTON, N.J. (WPVI) -- Drivers are hitting the road and heading to the Jersey shore this Labor Day weekend amid soaring gas prices.

According to Gas Buddy, this is poised to be the most expensive Labor Day at the pump on record.

"I'm heading down to the shore. My cousin is coming in from Ohio, so just going down to Sea Isle," said Hanlon Doyle of Holland.

"Filled up yesterday after work. Obviously, they're more expensive than what people would like, but such is life if you want to drive anywhere," added Doyle, addressing the gas prices.

According to AAA, historically speaking, high gas prices don't stop travelers.

"I think it wasn't a factor because the price of everything is so high so what's an extra dollar for a gallon of gas," said Tim of Hatfield.

AAA's Jana Tidwell says drivers might look for ways to save, like checking any discount programs you may be a part of through AAA, wholesale clubs, grocery stores, or credit cards.

Tidwell also advised to stay on top of routine vehicle maintenance to improve gas mileage.

Lloyd Rittenhouse, of Wilkes Barre, is heading to the shore for work and is expecting crowds on the roads as it gets later.

"I'm heading to the shore now, and it's going to be horrible, but it's the last weekend. I didn't want to do it today- but the job calls, and I got to go," said Rittenhouse.
