Gas tax rate goes up by 4.2 cents per gallon in New Jersey

TRENTON, N.J. (WPVI) -- The price of gas went up in New Jersey as 2026 began.

As of January 1, the gas tax rate in the state went up by 4.2 cents per gallon.

That brings the total rate to 49.1 cents per gallon.

That's close to some of the highest in the country.

The money will be used to support the Garden State's transportation trust fund, which improves infrastructure.
