Gov. Sherrill says tour of detention center was 'closely controlled'

NEWARK, N.J. (WPVI) -- New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill says she was finally allowed to tour a controversial detention center in Newark, where protesters have been clashing with law enforcement for weeks.

But she says that the tour was "closely controlled."

The governor released a statement on Monday, saying she received a limited tour of Delaney Hall, which she says was not acceptable.

"I was not allowed to meet or speak directly with the detainees, which continues to raise serious questions about the real conditions of the facility and the treatment of those held there," she wrote in the statement.

Governor Sherrill said that she vows to keep pushing to speak with the detainees.

Delaney Hall has been at the center of a firestorm over allegations of inhumane conditions.

Protests have resulted in violent clashes and arrests.
