Gov. Sherrill signs controversial immigration bills into law in New Jersey

TRENTON, N.J. (WPVI) -- Governor Mikie Sherrill signed three controversial immigration bills into law on Wednesday in New Jersey.

The bills put limits on ICE agents in the Garden State.

"In the past two months, we've watched poorly trained, masked ICE agents put communities across the country in danger. In this state, we have drawn a line," Sherrill said.

The new laws signed by the Democrat prevent enforcement officers from wearing masks and protects residents' immigration data.

It also enshrines the state's sanctuary policy into law, which restricts when local police can cooperate with federal agents.

Democrats argue it protects vulnerable communities from mass deportations.

New Jersey Assemblyman Gregory Myhre, a Republican from Ocean County, says it puts public safety at risk.

"It is 100% politics over public safety," Myhre said. "It impacts public safety because every crime committed by an illegal alien is a crime that did not have to happen. We have enough problems with our own people."

Since taking office, Sherrill has condemned the Trump administration's aggressive immigration tactics.

Last week, the state sued the federal government over the purchase of a warehouse in Roxbury to be used as an ICE facility.
