Couple hurt after tree crushes car during severe weather
The strong winds were part of a one-two punch of severe weather.
PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- Two people were hospitalized on Friday afternoon after a large tree fell on their vehicle in Philadelphia as gusty winds swept through the region.
The incident happened around 3 p.m. along Walnut Lane in Roxborough, where crews continued clearing debris late Friday.
Police said the couple was taken to a hospital, but their conditions were not immediately available.
Officials reported additional downed trees across the area, including in Upper Chichester and Broomall in Delaware County, Pa.
In Washington Township, N.J., police said the winds brought a 100-foot tree down onto a home on the unit block of Beech Avenue. We're told no one was inside at the time.
"I'm in awe. I've seen a lot of big trees come down here, nothing like that," said a Chestnut Hill resident after a tree came down on a home on Seminole Street.
In Stanton, Del., cleanup was underway after a tree snapped and fell on a truck. The driver told Action News he had stepped out moments before impact.
"I just checked the windows to make sure they were up," said Kevin Finch. "Walked inside and heard the crash."
The strong winds were part of a one-two punch of severe weather. Heavy rain earlier in the day caused flooding that slowed the morning commute.
Major highways, including the Blue Route, were backed up due to crashes and water-covered lanes. Crews were seen clearing storm drains along the eastbound Schuylkill Expressway near the Belmont Avenue exit.
Officials encourage residents to stay alert for fallen branches and icy spots as temperatures continue to fall overnight.
