6abc celebrates retirement of longest-serving president and GM

PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- Bernie Prazenica, 6abc's longest-serving president and general manager, is retiring after 17 years in the role and more than four decades with the station.

During a celebration on Tuesday night, Prazenica reflected on his time at 6abc as colleagues honored his career and leadership.

"This is my family; my 6abc family for 43 years. I love them. I love the station," he said.

Prazenica began his career in the Action News sales department in 1982. He later served as president and general manager of WTVD, WPVI's sister station, before returning to Philadelphia to lead 6abc.

"The journey's been wonderful. It's been fun. There's ups and downs, but there's no place better than 6abc," Prazenica said.

Family, friends and staff members celebrated his successful career on Tuesday night.

"We want to give him the proper send-off with a lot of fun, heartfelt, warm wishes and send him off into a fabulous retirement," said 6abc's Vice President of Community Engagement Nikki Hawkins.

Colleagues credited him with modernizing the station's facilities and fostering a strong newsroom culture.

Former longtime anchor Jim Gardner said, "It's a tough job. Somebody has to do it. We're all lucky that it was Bernie Prazenica."

Vice President and News Director Tom Davis praised Prazenica's leadership.

"Not only is he a phenomenal guy, but he also knew how to lead people with a good culture and kindness, and he was innovative, and he set the standard for all of us," Davis said.

Prazenica was also known for his community involvement and support of local organizations.

"What impresses me most about him is his commitment to the team at 6abc and his love for this amazing city of Philadelphia," said Chad Matthews, president of ABC Owned Television Stations.

"This company owes you a great debt of gratitude. We want you to enjoy your beautiful wife, Patty, your incredible children and your beautiful grandchildren. Much success in retirement, Bernie. We love you," added Debra OConnell, the ABC News Group and Disney Entertainment Networks president.

As he steps into retirement, Prazenica shared this secret to success that he hopes will continue guiding the station. "Together we can accomplish anything, and that the community along with us, we can make a difference," he said.

Anchor Rick Williams and Meteorologist Cecily Tynan also share their well-wishes.

"You deserve to finally take a break because running this station is a 24-hour job," said Williams.

"And come visit us - maybe during the Thanksgiving Day Parade or at least watch 6abc. You have to, Bernie" laughed Tynan.

6abc will always be Bernie's house. The lobby will be named in his honor for the legacy he leaves behind.
