Immigrant advocates push for protections at World Cup events

PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- Immigrant advocates and members of Philadelphia City Council gathered outside City Hall on Wednesday to call for stronger protections for undocumented and mixed-status families.

The Pennsylvania Immigrant Coalition said its goal is to ensure residents understand their rights, especially those who may fear potential immigration enforcement at large gatherings.

"If we wait until ICE shows up at a watch party it's already too late," said Council Minority Leader Kendra Brooks.

Organizers urged restaurants, block party hosts and even FIFA Fan Fest planners to take steps that make attendees feel safe.

Oscar Lopez of Brewerytown said many immigrants worry about being targeted based on appearance.

"There is this fear we all have some form of legal status, my folks and I, but we don't look American to some people," he said.

The coalition plans to hold two virtual information sessions on Thursday and Monday to remind people of their rights during major public events.

In a video posted online, Department of Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin said federal efforts during the World Cup will focus on counterfeit tickets and merchandise, human trafficking and drug smuggling.

He did not specifically address immigration enforcement.

The Pennsylvania Immigrant Collation said its outreach aims to ensure residents feel safe participating in World Cup celebrations across Philadelphia.
