TRENTON, N.J. (WPVI) -- A man who ran into a burning home to save a woman is being hailed as a hero after a fire tore through seven row houses late Friday night, killing an 18-year-old and displacing more than 20 residents.
The fire broke out around 11 p.m. on the 1200 block of North Olden Avenue, leaving all seven homes uninhabitable. As of Monday, the block remained closed while investigators worked to determine the cause.
"At this time, it is undetermined. We don't have any indication of it being a criminal act," said Capt. Lisette Rios, public information officer for the Trenton Police Department.
Trenton Mayor Reed Gusciora said the community is mourning the loss of Joseph Kokulo, an 18-year-old JROTC student at Trenton Central High School.
"It's just really a horrible situation," Gusciora said.
In addition to Kokulo's death, three people were hospitalized, with two still in critical but stable condition. A total of 22 people were displaced.
"We're accepting donations," Gusciora said. "But they really need to start all over again."
As the investigation continues, stories of bravery have emerged.
Donnie Wilson rushed into one of the burning homes after a child told him his grandmother was trapped inside.
"A little boy was running out, and he said his grandma was trapped inside ... she wouldn't come out without her cats," Wilson said.
Wilson sustained burns on his right arm while trying to save the animals and get the woman to safety.
"When we got downstairs, it spread so fast. It was already the whole front of the house was on fire. I told her we can't go back, we've got to go out," he recalled.
The Red Cross is assisting displaced residents for the next several days, while city officials work on plans to demolish the damaged structure and provide long-term support.
