Customers are taking to social media to voice their displeasure with Jessica Alba's The Honest Company, saying they suffered painful sunburns while wearing the company's SPF 30 sunscreen.
People are posting photos of their red and sunburned heads and shoulders, which they claim happened while wearing The Honest Company's broad-spectrum, SPF 30 honest sunscreen lotion.
Broad spectrum SPF sunscreen is defined by the American Cancer Society as sunscreen that has been tested and shown to protect against both UVA and UVB rays.
The sunscreen is currently rated 2.9 out of 5 stars on Amazon. Many of the reviewers shared similar images of harsh sunburns.
"We were all extremely burned! Especially my little 2 year old! She had blisters on her shoulder! It is so sad! Worst product ever!" wrote Amazon user Jaymie Chapman.
"My daughters back looked like a tomato and even blistered in one spot! I started talking to friends about it and turns out they had the same problem," wrote Amazon user frogger90.
The Honest Company provided ABC with the following after receiving criticism over their sunscreen:
According to the Skin Cancer Foundation, one blistering sunburn in childhood or adolescence can double a person's chances at developing melanoma later in life. The foundation recommends that people should seek shade, cover up with clothing including a wide-brimmed hat, and wear UV-blocking sunglasses in addition to wearing sunscreen when spending time outside.
The Honest Company posted the following statement to its blog Monday night, saying their sunscreen passed all SPF 30 testing requirements, but that they are reaching out to those who have been posting complaints on social media.
We have a dedicated team of Honest employees, parents, and partners who carefully reviewed our Sunscreen product to make sure that it meets our highest standards prior to release. Our previous Sunscreen formulation had a 40-minute water resistance and customers told us that it didn't apply as easily as they would've liked. Based on our own experience and consumer feedback, we redesigned our Sunscreen Lotion for 80-minute water resistance and an improved formulation that allows for easier application and a lighter-weight feel.
We've gone through extensive third-party testing in accordance with government regulations and our Sunscreen Lotion passed all SPF 30 testing requirements. It also received the best score possible from the Environmental Working Group (EWG). We care about taking every precaution possible to ensure that your product experience will keep you healthy and happy.
That said, what matters most to us is your trust and confidence. We're passionate about living up to your expectations as much as our own. We've personally picked up the phone to speak with many of you who have called our customer service hotline. Our team is reaching out to everyone who has posted on social media to assure you that we're committed to your safety and satisfaction. For those who have expressed concerns about our Sunscreen Lotion, we want you to know that we hear you and we're here for you. As always, we'll do what it takes to make it right. You can reach us at: 1.888.862.8818."
