Beachgoers enjoy Labor Day down at the Jersey Shore

OCEAN CITY, N.J. (WPVI) -- It's been a winning weekend at the Jersey Shore, as beachgoers packed the sand and boardwalks to celebrate Labor Day and the unofficial end of summer.

Families filled the beaches Monday, enjoying below-average temperatures and low humidity.

"The air is fresh out here, it smells great. I'm taking it in," said Aisha Young of Blackwood, NJ. "As you can see we're out here in sweats so we're not hot but we don't want to be too cold once the temperature starts to drop."

For local businesses, the holiday weekend marks one last chance to capitalize on summer crowds before the season winds down.

"We got some caramel popcorn from Johnson's. I came all the way down from Lansdale just to get it to stuff my face," said Joe Dedominic of Lansdale, Pa.

"I'm just soaking it up and enjoying it, eating some Johnson's popcorn and ice cream, all the sweet stuff," added Kristen Clark of Cherry Hill.

At Douglass Candies, customers stocked up on their favorites, with fall flavors already making an appearance.

"Our seasonal fudge is the pumpkin fudge. It is very popular. We're selling out of it almost every day," said store manager Jessica Argerakis. "They always ask about online ordering and when we open back up. So people will stock up."

Douglass Candies remains open through Christmas, offering seasonal treats as the weather cools.

Whether it's popcorn, French fries, ice cream or pizza, visitors are taking it all in.

"The kids start school on Friday so it was big hoorah, so all the high school kids were down here and they had a blast," said Amanda Saitta of Lansdale, Pennsylvania.

While the long weekend is winding down, many are squeezing in every last second of summer fun.

"It's been a lot of fun, last weekend of the summer so you gotta come out and enjoy it, beautiful weather, so we're having a great time," said Joseph Connolly of Horsham, Pa.
