'Philly Reading Coaches' help students upgrade their literacy skills

PHILADELPHIA, Pennsylvania (WPVI) -- As part of the City of Philadelphia's Office of Children and Families, local volunteers can become "Philly Reading Coaches."

The volunteers build up reading skills in children, primarily kindergarten to 3rd grade.

By working one-on-one with the coaches, children enhance their reading comprehension level so that they can improve their education for years to come.

They are implemented in many schools, such as Franklin S. Edmonds School, featured in the video above.

"Reading is an important skill because it's how you can navigate life to advocate for yourself. It's continuing to make an impact that is just deeper and broader every year, one page at a time," said Program Manager, Chalet Willis-Butts.
