SHIP BOTTOM, N.J. (WPVI) -- A 28yearold Forked River man died Friday after being caught in a rip current off East 21st Street, according to the Ship Bottom Police Department.
Emergency crews were called at about 2:28 p.m. for reports of four swimmers in distress, police said. When officers and firefighters arrived, three of the individuals had already made it back to shore.
The fourth swimmer, identified as David MaldonadoOcelotl, remained missing in the surf. Fire rescue personnel, assisted by local surfers, located him unconscious and not breathing, authorities said.
First responders began lifesaving measures on the beach before MaldonadoOcelotl was taken to Southern Ocean Medical Center, where he was later pronounced dead.
