Memorial grows for Penn State student fatally shot in South Philadelphia

PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- A memorial continues to grow in South Philadelphia for a Penn State senior who was shot and killed just feet from his home.

Billy Schmidt, 22, left a neighborhood bar early Saturday morning when two people approached him on Durfor Street near 20th Street.

Police said one of the two stole his phone before he was fatally shot.

Investigators recovered his phone under a nearby car, but no arrests have been made.

On Monday, Penn State officials shared that Schmidt had been studying digital journalism and media.

School leaders have reached out to his family and are providing counseling to students.
