Police seek driver in hit-and-run that killed e-bike rider

MT LAUREL, N.J. (WPVI) -- Investigators in Mount Laurel are searching for a driver who fled after hitting and killing a man riding an electric bike.

Officials released surveillance footage showing the vehicle believed to be involved in the crash.

The incident happened just after midnight on Monday along the 1100 block of Route 73.

Detectives identified the victim as Anthony Caprio III, 49, of Magnolia, New Jersey.

His mother, Michele Caprio, said he was heading to the store.

"Anthony, I always loved you so much. You have no idea how much I loved you," she said, speaking less than a day after learning of her son's death. She said they were preparing to celebrate his 50th birthday on Jan. 4.

She described him as "very energetic" and "a great mechanic," adding, "He could fix anything."

Police said Caprio was riding southbound on the 1100 block of Route 73 around 12:15 a.m. when the SUV struck him.

Lt. Thomas Corsanico of the department's criminal investigation division said the victim was actually dragged under the vehicle for approximately a quarter mile.

"That's horrible," Michele Caprio said. "My heart is breaking."

Investigators said the driver left Caprio unresponsive in the roadway. Detectives have obtained surveillance video of the SUV from a nearby business, but do not yet have the vehicle's license plate.

Corsanico said, "Our detectives are out diligently working trying to identify who this is, and we're confident we will, but I think it's in their best interest to just come forward."

Michele Caprio echoed that plea.

"Please come forward. Please. Just so that we can get closure. If this happened to your child, you would want closure, too," she said.

Police said the SUV continued into Evesham Township, and investigators are working with local authorities to locate the vehicle.
