A new surveillance video of carjackers on the prowl at an upscale New Jersey mall has brought the focus on parking lot safety for shoppers this holiday season.
Shoppers have new safety concerns after ABC News obtained a chilling surveillance video showing suspected carjackers moments before they allegedly shot and killed 30-year-old Dustin Friedland in a mall parking lot before speeding away in his SUV.
Police believe those suspects may have been chasing other potential victims as well.
For Carla Oseti, the video brings back memories of when she was carjacked 10 years ago.
She said she's thankful to be alive because she followed her instincts.
"I told then they could have whatever they wanted. All you have at that point is your instincts," said Oseti.
Security expert Jarrett Arthur demonstrated other ways to stay safe this holiday season as well.
"Don't just walk directly to your driver's side door. Take a few extra steps and approach the front or the back so this way I can check the other side and make sure no one's hiding," he said.
"As I approach, just like I checked the far side of the car, I want to also take a quick peek underneath, make sure that's clear and then continue to take a quick peek in the back as well," he suggests.
Other safety tips include to stay off your cell phone, have your keys in hand and try to park in a well lit area.
But if someone does approach you, Arthur says be ready to fight back by first using your voice to sound the alarm.
And if that doesn't work, Arthur also suggests as a last resort if you can't get away, using the palm of your hand to strike the attacker's face.
