Residents targeted in home burglaries by fake workers, police warn

PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- Philadelphia police are investigating at least three diversion-style burglaries targeting older residents, where suspects posed as contractors or utility workers to steal cash, jewelry, and other valuables.

Authorities say the suspects struck on July 9 on the 2000 block of Tomlinson Road, Aug. 12 on the 4300 block of Deer Path Lane, and Aug. 20 on the 3000 block of Vista Street.

Investigators believe the suspects targeted homes without security cameras, though a nearby surveillance camera captured one of the suspects allegedly involved.

"They're our most vulnerable people, and we all need as a community to look after them," said Captain Jack Ryan.

Police say the male suspects, often dressed in green or safety vests, knocked on doors claiming to be contractors or public utility employees. While one suspect distracted the resident, an accomplice entered the home and ransacked the master bedroom.

"As they're doing that, they're in communication with an accomplice who enters through the front door, and they ransack the master bedroom for jewelry and valuables," said Captain Ryan.

Neighbors expressed shock and concern.

"It's horrible," said Deborah from Mayfair. "It's not liked it used to be."

"It's sad because everyone gets along; everyone is family," said Patrice Jackson from Somerton. "A lot of people take advantage of them, and they're almost like an easy target."

Residents say they're now taking extra precautions.

"Get more Ring cameras out there," said Jackson. "Be alert."

Police emphasized that public utility workers do not need to enter homes, as most work is done remotely.
