BERLIN TWP., N.J. (WPVI) -- A man was shot and killed by police on Tuesday in Berlin Township, New Jersey.

It happened around 2 p.m. near Haddon and Bate avenues.

According to the NJ Attorney General's Office, two New Jersey State Police detectives were conducting an investigation involving the man. At some point, authorities say one detective opened fire.

Life-saving measures were performed at the scene, but police say the man died after being taken to Cooper University Hospital.

Further details on what led up to the fatal shooting have not been released.

One witness recalled the moments before the gunfire.

"They were talking to each other, and it seemed like it got a little louder. And then all of a sudden, one of the officers seemed like he felt threatened, because all of a sudden, things changed," the witness said.

Edward McNeil Jr. said he heard the shots being fired while in his backyard.

"I heard three gunshots from my backyard. I was just picking strawberries and I heard three pops," McNeil said. "Next thing I know, three cop cars are here and undercover cars are coming by."

The man who died has not been identified.

The AG's office says a revolver was recovered at the scene.

No injuries to the officers involved were reported.

The officers involved are assigned to the United States Marshals Service NY/NJ Regional Fugitive Task Force.
