WASHINGTON TOWNSHIP, N.J. (WPVI) -- Police in Gloucester County, New Jersey, are asking residents for help identifying a suspect accused of committing lewd acts outside a local apartment building, prompting concern among neighbors.
Washington Township Police Chief Patrick Gurcsik said the department has already received some tips, but is urging more people to come forward.
Officers are investigating reports that the suspect engaged in lewd conduct outside the W building at the Washington Way Apartments on Barnsboro Road.
"It's very alarming, especially if you have a loved one who is the victim of such a crime," Gurcsik said.
Gurcsik added that investigators do not believe he lives in that area.
Residents said the situation has left them shaken.
"It's upsetting. I feel bad for all the people that live here," said Terri, a resident at the apartment complex.
"I feel terrible," said resident Agatha Malave.
"We don't get that very often here, so it was very surprising to even hear that was going on," said resident Tammy Waller. "My mom - it was a little disturbing to her."
Neighbors who leave for work early in the morning said they have not noticed anything unusual, but many are now more cautious, especially with children living nearby.
"I would think the parents, and there's a lot of kids on either side of us, I would think they would hold them tight," Waller said.
Police have increased overnight patrols while the search continues. Some residents said they are taking their own precautions.
"Just watch. Pivot, look around before I get to my car," Waller said.
"I'll keep my chains on my door and my locks on at all times. I just hope they catch him soon," said Terri.
