PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- A new fall season has arrived, and with it comes the return of 6abc's School Spirit Fridays, which is now in its third year of spotlighting local high school marching bands.

Neshaminy High School opened this year's celebration with a showcase of student talent.

Neshaminy's marching band features 90 musicians, each contributing to what Band Director Michael Pettis described as the school's signature style.

"Oh, that's Neshaminy, that's Neshaminy. It's both graceful with respect, but also they love to have fun. They love to do things well," Pettis said.

Students say the experience teaches discipline while balancing academics, rehearsals and the excitement of performing for Friday night crowds.

"You learn so much things about work ethic and discipline," said senior drum major Vic Chen.

Senior and marching band president Jenna Smith said the atmosphere changes when the band plays during football games. "It brings such a different level of spirit when we're playing songs in the stands," she said.

The color guard adds a visual layer to the performance, senior Kara McMullen said. "The color guard brings the colors. It's so much fun. We are a visual of what they play."

With the first day of school approaching, students say they're eager for the season ahead, even those experiencing their final year in the band.

"I'm so sad, it's my last year, but I'm so excited to see how this is going to go," said senior Pit section leader Shannon MacBride.
