Jersey shore officer braves bay waters to rescue injured dog

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. (WPVI) -- A police officer in Atlantic City braved chilly water to rescue an injured dog.

Police body-camera footage and video from the Atlantic City Fire Department captured officer Matt Schmidt's heroic efforts.

As he arrived, the stray dog had already escaped from animal control and still had the catch pole around its neck when it jumped into the bay near Venice Park.

Schmidt removed his weapon and shoes before plunging into the cold water. He swam roughly 100 yards against the current to reach the dog and safely brought it back to shore.

The dog was treated and later reunited with its owner.
