Weekend transit disruptions impact subway, rail riders in New York City, New Jersey, Long Island
NEW YORK -- New Yorkers planning to travel this weekend may want to leave some extra time.
The MTA is warning riders about major service changes on several subway lines, including the L, N, R and W trains, as crews perform track and signal work in Manhattan, Queens and Brooklyn.
N train service will be disrupted on multiple weekends and overnight periods throughout August, while R train service will be suspended on weekdays from Aug. 24-28.
L train riders will see some of the biggest impacts. During the weekends of Aug. 21-24 and Aug. 28-31, trains will not run between Broadway Junction and Canarsie-Rockaway Parkway. Free shuttle buses will replace service along that stretch.
Long Island Rail Road riders will also see changes this month as crews install new switches and signals near Elmont-UBS Arena. The work is part of a larger project aimed at improving service to the arena and increasing reliability for eastbound Huntington and Ronkonkoma trains that stop there.
The work is scheduled on the weekends of Aug. 8-10, Aug. 15-17 and Aug. 22-24, with the biggest impacts expected on the Hempstead Branch. Overnight and early morning Huntington and Ronkonkoma riders will also see schedule changes, and Ronkonkoma Branch service will be reduced to hourly on the weekend of Aug. 22-23.
Meanwhile, NJ Transit is adding special rail service for the Usher and Chris Brown concerts at MetLife Stadium on Friday and Saturday. Riders traveling to the stadium by train will need a wristband, available at Secaucus Junction after showing a valid ticket to Meadowlands Station.
Transit agencies are encouraging riders to check schedules and service alerts before heading out.
