PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- After a string of sold-out shows for its Los Angeles premiere, West Philly's own Todd Anthony is bringing his critically acclaimed one-man stage production, RED, home to Philadelphia.
It opens Friday night at the Independence Seaport Museum on Columbus Boulevard, and centers on the early life and transformation of Malcolm X.
"By transformation, we mean from Detroit Red to Malcolm X, and we focus heavily on identity, transformation, and purpose," says Anthony. "We're talking about someone who grew up in a tumultuous background, upbringing, inner city life, and all of that pointing you to what it is that you're called to be."
The actor and playwright, who is also a Penn State alumnus, says he hopes this show draws a multi-generational crowd here at home, especially young people.
He hopes they are inspired by Malcolm X's journey and his own.
"This is special because it's my first project that I've written, produced, and starred in," he says. "I'm bringing it back to my hometown. I feel like I owe it to Philadelphia as a thank you to say thank you for pouring into me, not only as a young man, but as an artist.'"
RED is at the Independence Seaport Museum on July 10 and July 11.
