Fire officials are investigating a restaurant in Naples, Florida, after part of the building collapsed while people were inside.
Adriana Sarmiento said she tried to alert the residents about the danger but they thought she was exaggerating.
"I was right at her door, about to leave, and for some reason, she just asked me to stay," Erick de Moura told CNN.
Static and cracking noises could be heard from the landline, with no discernable human voices.
In a structural field service report from 2018, engineers pointed out the evidence of flooding, cracking and corrosion in the building.
"You just hope that there is somebody under there and they're hanging on, but as the hours go by, it becomes less and less possible," he said.
