Market chain bans egg sales to minors leading up to Halloween

QUAKERTOWN, Pa. (WPVI) -- A Pennsylvania-based grocery store chain is doing its part to keep the "trick" out of trick-or-treating this year.

Redner's Markets, which is headquartered in Reading, Pa., operates stores in Delaware, Maryland, New York, New Jersey, Virginia, West Virginia and Ohio as well as Pennsylvania.

The chain is continuing its longstanding practice of banning the sale of eggs to anyone under 18 years of age until the day after Halloween.

The practice is designed to curb the practice of vandals throwing raw eggs at homes, businesses, vehicles and even people.

While there's no specific law prohibiting people from attacking each other with eggs, everyone knows the likelihood of being on the receiving end of breakfast food vandalism goes up during the days leading up to Halloween.

That's especially true on the night before Halloween, also known as Mischief Night.

Neighbors we spoke with in Quakertown say it's an unfortunate reality.

And that's why Redner's is once again activating its long-standing policy of not selling eggs to minors during the last week of October.

Plenty of Redner's customers, who were unaware of the policy, say it makes sense.

But other customers told us they don't think it will discourage a delinquent from vandalizing other people's property on Mischief Night.
