A parent will be charged with a felony after allegedly attacking a Mississippi high school girls' basketball coach Thursday night.

The altercation occurred when Hamilton High School coach Sue Verner was attempting to enforce a rule that requires players to ride the bus back after away games, according to multiple reports. The parent objected, and "knocked [Verner] out cold," CBS affiliate WCBI reported.

The parent, Heather Thompson, will be charged with simple assault on a school official, Amory police chief Ronnie Bowen told WCBI. She turned herself in and is scheduled to be arraigned Friday.

Verner was treated at a hospital for minor injuries and released, the Northeast Mississippi Daily Journal reported.

The altercation also caused police to clear the gym and cancel the boys' basketball game between Hamilton and Amory, according to multiple reports.
