The Philadelphia Union announced on Monday that the club has signed veteran defender Oguchi Onyewu ahead of the 2017 season.

Onyewu, 34, joins the Union as a discovery signing after a long and successful career playing for a number of top clubs in Europe and twice representing the United States at World Cups in 2006 and 2010.

"Oguchi is a big, physical presence who brings experience and veteran professionalism, important traits that we believe will be an asset for our group of young defenders," Philadelphia Union sporting director Earnie Stewart said on the team's website. "He provides excellent depth at the center-back position and we are pleased that we were able to add him to our squad."

Besides registering 69 caps with the U.S., Onyewu has also played for Metz, Standard Liege, AC Milan, Queens Park Rangers and, most recently, Charlton Athletic during the 2014-15 season.
