GLASSBORO, N.J. -- Authorities say a police K-9 dog has died after it was spooked by fireworks in southern New Jersey and was hit by car after escaping from its kennel.

The South Jersey Times reports that the 6-year-old German Shepherd named Anka was killed Saturday night.

The dog's partner, Glassboro Patrolman Charles Williams, found the dog missing when he returned home Saturday night. An off-duty officer found her in the street about a half mile away after police from Glassboro and surrounding towns began searching for the dog.

Williams and the dog graduated from the Philadelphia Police Canine Academy in October 2011.
