Delaware fatal stabbing suspect surrenders

WILMINGTON, Del. - August 19, 2009 On Tuesday at approximately 7:00 p.m. 18-year-old Joe Cooper turned himself in to New Castle County Police and was then transferred to the custody of Wilmington Police. He has been charged with 1st Degree Murder and Possession of a Deadly Weapon during the Commission of a Felony.

The arrest comes after police were called to the area of 22nd and Washington Streets Sunday night for a report of a stabbing. When they arrived at the scene, officers were then directed to Wilmington Hospital where they were told a stabbing victim had just arrived.

The victim, identified as 19-year-old Maurice Allen of the 400 block of Bethune Drive in New Castle, became involved in an argument with the suspect on the corner of McCabe Avenue and Monroe Street. During the argument, the suspect pulled out a kitchen knife from his waistband and stabbed the victim in the chest.

Witnesses put the victim in a vehicle and transported him to the hospital.

The victim was pronounced dead at the hospital.
