Deaths of women in Berks Co. motel a mystery

AMITY TWP., Pa. - April 28, 2010

Investigators have been able to say one of the women worked at the motel, that they knew each other, and both were over the age of 40.

The bodies of the two women were found inside the main office of the Hillside Motel in Amity Township around 7:00 p.m. Tuesday.

"At the present time we have not positively identified these individuals," said Berks County District Attorney John T. Adams.

A person who was staying at the motel made the gruesome discovery.

Witnesses told police it appeared that both of the victims were shot to death, but that has yet to be confirmed.

The motel, which sits along busy Route 422, was evacuated after police searched all of the rooms and questioned each patron and employee.

No more victims were found during the search and so far, investigators tell Action News, there are no suspects and no known motives tied to this case.

"Right now it's still an enigma. Hopefully we'll get that piece of information that will start to pull the puzzle together and we can move forward," said Chief Kent Shuebrook of the Amity Twp. Police.

Meantime, the people who live in this quiet town in Berks County are shaken by the news.

"I work in the city of Reading and grew up there and, as the years have been going on, we've seen more and more of this in the outlying communities," said Tom Kahler.

"Make sure you lock your doors before you go to bed tonight, because that's not always something you think about in this area," said Mary Beth Slaybaugh.

The D.A.'s office says it is confident they will be able to identify the women after autopsies are performed.
