Don Minnaert of Geneseo was using an ultralight rig to pull in small panfish when he hooked up with the bass.
He says the bass fought him so hard, he lost track of where he was - and ended up falling 15 feet down into the old Hennepin Canal.
Minnaert says he went under several times before he was able to find a foothold - and his son's dog Calli barked loudly enough that someone came to his rescue.
The bass got away.
But like a good fisherman, Minnaert says he plans to go back to get it.
