On Tuesday morning the Chester County CID was called out to a landfill at the intersection of Route 926 and Route 41 in Chatham Township, Chester County. The detectives are in the landfill to find additional evidence in the West Goshen love triangle homicide.
No word on what, if anything, was found.
21-year-old Stephen Shappell was taken into custody by the Denver Colorado Police Department on Sunday at approximately 6:10 p.m.
Shappell will be returned to Pennsylvania and is facing charges including criminal homicide.
Police say 34-year-old Morgan Mengel confessed to killing her husband, Kevin, with Shappell's help on June 17th.
Mengel told police she was having an affair with Shappell who worked with her husband at MKB Landscaping.
According to investigators, Kevin Mengel went missing on Sunday June 20th, a fact his mother reported to police after she started getting text messages from her son, but he usually did not send texts.
"[She was] receiving some text messages purported to be from him, which were completely out of character for him and that alerted her that there may be something wrong," West Goshen Township Police Chief Michael Carroll said.
Police say the text messages were sent from Mengel's wife to avoid suspicion.
After repeated interviews with Morgan Mengel, police say she finally broke down and admitted the affair with Shappell. She also confessed they hatched a plan to kill her husband.
Morgan Mengel told police the two first tried drugging her husband.
When that didn't work, she says, Shappell hit him in the head with a shovel.
Then, she admitted, they buried his body in a deep grave behind Marple Newtown High School.
The grave was so deep it took police more than 24 hours and a cadaver dog to find it.
"I can tell you that without the use of this dog, we would not have been able to find this body," Carroll said.
Morgan Mengel was taken into police custody on Saturday and, like Shappell, is also facing murder charges.
Police say Kevin Mengel is, however, not the only victim of this crime.
"Obviously the children have lost their father, and obviously what has gone on, they're going to lose their mother for an extended period of time," Carroll said.
