Snow, ice create slick roads and sidewalks

PHILADELPHIA - January 18, 2011

The storm prompted hundreds of school delays mixed with spotty closures in a wide swath stretching from Philadelphia west to Harrisburg then Pittsburgh. Commuters heading out early found their cars and driveways covered in a coating of ice.

PennDOT officials said about 450 trucks were out salting and brining roadways early Tuesday in the Philadelphia area. Maintenance chief Nick Martino says concerns about making roads even more slippery has trucks leaving a thin layer of slush rather than completely wiping them clear.

Temperatures were forecast to rise through Tuesday with showers persisting into the afternoon.

Snow, freezing rain slow commute in NJ

Commuters around New Jersey are advised to allow extra time to get to work because of winter weather Tuesday.

Snow changed over to freezing rain in parts of the state. It's mostly all snow in northern New Jersey. It's raining along the coast and in southern New Jersey where temperatures are above freezing.

The Transportation Department has plows and salt spreaders on the highways. But it's slow going for motorists.

Speed restrictions are posted along parts of the New Jersey Turnpike.

NJ Transit says rail riders can expect delays of up to 15 minutes because of the weather. NJ Transit says bus service in northern New Jersey counties is up to 20 minutes behind schedule because of road conditions.

Travelers are facing delays at Newark Liberty International Airport. The Federal Aviation Administration says a traffic management program because of the weather is delaying arrivals at Newark.

Icy conditions force Delaware school, govt. delays

Delaware government offices and schools are opening late due to icy road conditions.

The city of Wilmington said early Tuesday that its offices will open at 10 a.m. In New Castle County, state government and county offices are also opening at 10 a.m.

Several school districts are opening two hours late, including Appoquinimink, Brandywine, Christiana, Colonial and Red Clay.
