Mother jailed for sending kids to better school

Kelley Williams-Bolar is a single mom living in a high crime area of Akron, Ohio. The schools in her district are, as one might expect, not the best. After a burglary at her home, Williams-Bolar decided that she wanted to send her kids to a neighboring school district that has better schools.

The problem is she doesn't live in that district, but her father does. So she used her dad's address to enroll the kids.

The district didn't believe she lived there so they hired private detectives to follow her. When they proved her actual residency, they kicked the kids out and presented her with a bill for $30,000 tuition.

When she refused, she was indicted and convicted of falsifying her residency records. The judge sentenced her to 10 days in jail, put her on three years probation, and ordered her to perform community service.

Worse yet, Williams-Bolar is only 12 credit hours away from getting her teaching credential and this conviction means she can't teach in the state of Ohio.

The reality is people do this all over the country. It's not right, but if there was parity and all schools were good and given the same resources, there would be no need for this kind of deception.

Question of the Day: Should this be a jail-able offense?
